In our previous post, regarding adults and children not visiting the dentist enough, we discussed how a trend takes place when adults do not prioritize dental visits. The statistics presented by the American Dental Association demonstrated how only slightly more than 50% of adults consistently visit the dentist on the recommended basis (every six months) converts into almost the same amount for children.

At Centra Dental, we see that as a problem for the general health of teeth. Our south Houston dentists focus on pediatric dentistry because we understand the value of children’s teeth. We work to prevent or eliminate cavities and periodontal disease in kids. Our goal is not simply to have adults and children visit the dentist for prevention purposes, but to educate our dental patients on how to best take care of their oral health. Many patients grow up not understanding the importance of brushing twice daily, and flossing and rinsing daily.

Visiting the dentist as a kid is very important because of what is learned about teeth. It is also important because the pediatric dentist can find potential problems that can be addressed and fixed.

Early ortho is part of the process of addressing problems before they cause real harm. Most people do not develop perfectly straight teeth. There are millions who have crooked, misaligned or gapped teeth. These issues can allow for food particles to become hidden in hard to reach areas of the teeth, which can lead to cavities and gum disease.

At Centra Dental, we believe in the effectiveness of early ortho. Correcting teeth that suffer from these problems will help with the patient’s oral health in the long run. Straight teeth enable patients to keep every area of their teeth protected from plaque, food particles, and other issues.

What needs to take place in order to best protect teeth in our younger patients is that older patients need to understand the importance of visiting the dentist on a regular basis.

If your child is in need of a pediatric dentist, then contact our south Houston dental office today and schedule an appointment. Early ortho is a major part of what we do at Centra Dental. Allow us to address any orthodontic problems you or your child may have.

Millions of Americans visit the dentist every day. Millions of Americans do not visit the dentist every day. Either one makes perfect sense. But how do we know if people are going to the dentist consistently? The Health Policy Institute (HPI) of the American Dental Association (ADA) conducts research on dental-related topics, including the consistency of dental visits in the US.

While there are a higher percentage of people who visit the dentist on a regular basis, there is still a large percentage that do not. The HPI, in a recent study, discovered that only slightly more than 50% (52.3%) of adults consistently visited their dentist on the recommended basis (every six months), while the rest were either inconsistent, or just didn’t go. Here are those statistics:

  • 15.4% indicated they visited their dentist once per year;
  • 11% indicated they visited their dentist only once every two or three years;
  • 21.3% alarmingly indicated they had not visited their dentist in the past few years.

These statistics show that nearly 50% of adults do not hold their dental visits as high priority. The following statistics show that this mentality is better, but not much better with parents who have children under the age of 18:

  • 64.6% indicated that their children had consistently visited their dentist on the recommended basis (every six months);
  • 20.3% indicated they had visited their dentist only once in the past year;
  • 4.4% indicated they had visited their dentist only once in the past two or three years;
  • 10.7% indicated they had not visited their dentist at all in the past few years.

Ultimately, there is just an approximate 10% difference in adults ensuring they consistently visit their dentist and the children who consistently visit their dentist. This percentage difference is not wide enough to ensure that more people are growing up understanding the importance of going to the dentist.

At Centra Dental in Houston, we educate all of our patients - children and adults - on the importance of consistently visiting the dentist. Be certain to schedule your dental appointment every six months to keep your teeth as healthy as possible. Contact our Houston dental office today and schedule your appointment.

Children’s teeth are vital to the development of not only their oral health, but their entire physical health and mental health. Parents with children must consider the short-term and long-term benefits of training a child how to best take care of their teeth. It is incredibly important to ensure that children are brushing twice daily, flossing, and rinsing.

Oral health may be common idea that sounds positive, but the sound of it isn’t getting through to a lot of people. According to the American Association of Pediatric Dentists (AAPD), the state of children’s teeth continues to worsen over the years.

A recent study conducted by the AAPD, showed that 5-10% of children have oral health issues by the time they turn three years old. That number leaps dramatically to 60% by the time they reach five. In that number, 40% of those children will have contracted a dental carie when they enter kindergarten.

It isn’t simply about cavities. Oral health issues go much further and deeper than that. According to the AAPD, poor oral health affects the mind and body. Here are some of the issues:

Oral Health

  • Loss of baby teeth
  • Pain
  • Damage to permanent teeth
  • Crooked teeth
  • Vulnerable to caries and gum disease through life

General Health

  • Infections to ears, sinuses, cuts and brain
  • Life-threatening infections
  • Poor sleeping habits
  • Chewing difficulty/Malnutrition/Insufficient Growth
  • Disability

Intellectual Development

  • Poor speech articulation
  • Poor school performance
  • Missed school
  • Inattention in school

Social Development

  • Reluctance to speak, smile, or play
  • Teasing from others
  • Low self-esteem
  • Social ostracism

Yes, taking care of kids teeth extremely important, which is why we are so passionate about kids’ teeth. We want your children to enjoy having a beautiful and healthy smile as they grow up, but it is only possible if they start now and remain consistent.

Schedule your child’s dental appointment today for pediatric dentistry. Start your child on the right path and keep them moving forward to pristine oral health. We look forward to helping you child remain strong and avoid any of those issues the AAPD mentioned.

Not everyone is born with perfect teeth. In fact, it’s a rarity. This is why braces are in such high demand. Straight teeth always provide our south Houston patients with great confidence. They are able to smile more freely and know that they have an attractive smile that benefits their everyday life.

At Centra Dental, we provide patients, kids and adults, with a thorough dental examination to survey the state of the teeth. Not every set of teeth are the same, so not every set of teeth receives the same diagnosis. Depending on the extent of the dental issues, more time may be required, of course, the time requirement also depends on how old the patient is. Younger patients’ teeth are more pliable than older adults. There are various problems which require either less or more work. Here are some of the issues:

  • Gapped Teeth - Plenty of people, young and old, have gapped teeth, even if there are only a few gaps. Some people have straight teeth all around except for in between the two front top teeth. Gaps in the teeth are a relatively simple problem to address. The braces will simply begin to push the teeth closer together until they are completely aligned. The fewer the gaps, the less time required. The younger the patients, the easier the teeth will move. For minimal gaps, patients can use any of three options we provide: traditional metal braces, ceramic braces, or clear plastic trays.
  • Misaligned Teeth - This is a more serious issue as the teeth may be suffering from several problems. Misaligned means they are staggered. Teeth may be further back or upfront, but they are not in line with each other. Along with not being in line, they could also be gapped. This problem takes more time to fix and typically can’t be adjusted with plastic tray braces, or at least that is not our recommendation.
  • Malocclusion - This is a major issue with teeth because it means that they are not only misaligned and gapped, but also are causing problems with chomping down. The alignment from top to bottom is off. This oral issue usually takes the longest to correct with braces, and usually with metal or ceramic braces.

Are you suffering from any of the following dental issues? If so, you need braces to straighten out the problem. Our south Houston dental office provides various types of braces to help you smile again. Contact our office today. We look forward to helping you and your family.

When braces are mentioned, the typical response is that they are too expensive. At Centra Dental, we believe that a beautiful and healthy smile should never be out of the price range. This is why we have options for braces for as low as $1,995.

Our primary objective at our Southwest Houston dental clinic is to provide every patient with a positive experience, and a major part of the experience is ensuring that the dental procedure doesn’t break the bank. We try to meet every patient financially so that they can receive what they need orally at a price they can afford.

We understand how important straight teeth are. They not only increase a person’s confidence because they enrich their smile, but they also enhance a person’s oral health. Braces eliminates alignment problems in teeth, like gapped teeth, crooked teeth, or teeth that suffer from malocclusion. We discussed this in our most recent blog post, if you are searching for more details regarding this.

This is our goal, of course. We want everyone (those who need them) to have braces. We want everyone to have a smile they are proud to show off.

When braces are worn, the time commitment required is approximately 12 to 24 months. Considering that once they are off you will have straight teeth for the rest of your life, those one to two years don’t seem so long. The reason this time range exists is because everyone’s teeth are different. Some teeth are more misaligned than others, so they require braces for longer periods.

For those who need braces, we recommend that they receive them sooner rather than later. It is scientific fact that younger teeth belonging to adolescents are more easily moldable than teeth of patients who are older. Our orthodontists believe in the idea of early ortho.

If you are interested in affordable braces, then contact our dental office in Southwest Houston. We accept most dental plans and we make financial planning simple for every patient. We look forward to helping you achieve that bright and beautiful smile you’ve always wanted.

Orthodontics has become one of the most sought after dental practices in the US, especially within the youth age range. Approximately 75% of people who wear braces are of the adolescent years or younger. At Centra Dental, we encourage all of our Houston patients to consider receiving braces if their teeth are crooked, misaligned, or gapped.

Braces aren’t simply used for the beautification of smiles. They are used to protect the long-term health of teeth and the entire mouth.

Teeth that suffer from malocclusion, which is when teeth grow in impacted, can cause serious health risks. Problems, such as cavities, tooth decay, and gum disease, can easily arise because food particles can become lodged between or in the crevices of teeth. When this happens, the particles can decay and will negatively impact the health of the teeth and gums.

When teeth are misaligned or even gapped, food and sugars can become trapped and cause cavities. This is why we encourage all of our South Houston patients to brush twice daily and floss everyday. This greatly diminishes the risks of cavities.

When braces are placed on these teeth, however, they can become straight and therefore eliminate those hard to reach places. The safe spaces in the teeth no longer hold food particles, which helps the effectiveness of brushing and flossing.

At Centra Dental, our orthodontists understand the importance of having straight teeth and not simply the beauty of it. Our dental office, located in South Houston, offers every type of orthodontics available, including clear braces.

During your dental examination, our orthodontist will conduct a thorough examination of the state of your teeth. Depending on the extent of the dental issues, our dentist will recommend either traditional metal braces, clear braces, or plastic tray braces. For younger patients, like adolescents, their teeth are more adjustable and therefore can become straightened in a shorter amount of time. If your child has misaligned, crooked or gapped teeth, then braces may be just what they need. Contact our dental office today to schedule your appointment.

Dentistry continues to develop new technologies that help patients preserve their teeth and overall oral health. At Centra Dental in South Houston, we utilize these new medical breakthroughs to better serve you and your family. It is our primary goal to ensure you have a beautiful and healthy smile. One of those dental breakthroughs is the usage of Nu-Crowns.

For patients with weak teeth or deep cavities, Nu-Crowns can strengthen and revitalize a smile. Dental crowns are one of the most common types of dental procedures performed. Crowns are used to save existing teeth from further decay and enable a patient to return to the normality of chewing and speaking as if their teeth had always been healthy.

Dental crowns have allowed patients the opportunity to save their existing teeth on a long term basis, rather than having to opt to have their teeth pulled due to decay.

Nu-Crowns have taken the existing dental crown technology and expanded it to simplify the process of utilizing crowns. Here are several ways Nu-Crowns have simplified the dental crown procedure:

  • Dental Margins - Nu-Crowns provide extreme accuracy when it comes to aligning new dental crowns to the rest of the existing teeth. Due to excess resin in these crowns, our dentists are able to choose from two or three different crowns to fit each tooth. This allows for more accurate fitting.
  • Close Contact - Teeth need to be close together in order to help prevent food particles from becoming stuck or from allowing individual teeth to become weakened. Close neighboring teeth strengthens all of the teeth, and this is one of the benefits of Nu-Crowns. Nu-Crowns ensure there is close contact with neighboring teeth.
  • Occlusion - When the mouth closes, both jaw lines should be aligning correctly. There should be no unevenness with the teeth, which is called malocclusion. Malocclusion can cause stress on certain teeth in the mouth due to all of the pressure being placed on them. Due to this, those teeth can become weakened and even begin to break down. Nu-Crowns helps create a perfect alignment and alleviates those problems.
  • Faster Procedure - Since Nu-Crowns allow for dentists to choose from several crowns, it enables the procedure to be performed quicker. Along with the dental procedure being conducted in a more timely manner, Nu-Crowns also are more economical.

If you are suffering from deep cavities or weak teeth, then Nu-Crowns may be exactly what you need. Our Centra Dental dentists will provide a thorough examination of your teeth to conclude precisely your dental needs. You may simply need dental fillings or you may require dental crowns. Our dentists will discuss what is needed for you to continue with the best oral health possible. Contact our office today and schedule your dental appointment.

Receiving braces has become one of the most common dental procedures in the US. There are more than 4 million Americans who currently wear braces and there has been a 25% increase of people wearing braces over the past 25 years. At Centra Dental, we believe that this popularity with braces is a very big positive because it lets us know that more people are taking their oral health more seriously.

It can often be mistaken that braces are worn merely for superficial reasons. But beauty isn’t the sole purpose behind straightening teeth. Metal braces can correct or even prevent future problems in teeth, such as malocclusion. This can lead to food particles becoming hard to reach, which can cause cavities and other more severe oral problems.

When it comes to metal braces, however, most people get them for one particular reason: beautification. The smile is arguably the most memorable part of a person’s face, so there’s no shame in wanting braces for the mere reason of wanting to look your very best. You definitely aren’t alone, as we mentioned before about the 4 million currently wearing braces. But of those millions, there are plenty of big name celebrities, globally, who have braced their face. No, not even the celebrities are born with perfectly straight teeth.

Who Has Been Getting Braces?

This Buzzfeed article does a fine job of pointing out the celebrities who have had braces, including some of the biggest names like Prince Harry, Tom Cruise, Dakota Fanning, and Gwen Stefani.

If you’re looking for more proof (or encouragement) of who has received braces and come out looking fabulous, then check this article with other Hollywood celebrities who took the metal braces plunge. Many of them decided to have their teeth straightened later in life, like in their 30’s. But you won’t find them complaining.

The average time it takes for braces to work can range between 12 and 24 months. But, as made obvious in these articles, it is definitely worth the wait.

If you are considering braces because you want your teeth to be straightened or are suffering from malocclusion, then contact our dental office today in South Houston. We will provide you with a thorough oral examination and advise you on what you need to get your teeth exactly where you want them to be.

Braces are extremely common in the US. When you see someone who has very straight teeth, chances are they had braces at one point in time.

Since braces are so common, it is obvious that crooked, misaligned, or gapped teeth are even more common. Currently there are about 4 million Americans that have braces. About 3 million of these people are less than 18 years old.

Receiving braces early can be very beneficial. Here are some reasons why you should consider early orthodontics:

Oral Health - If your teeth or your child’s teeth are crooked, gapped, or misaligned, also known as malocclusion, this can create oral health issues. Food particles can become stuck in hard-to-reach places, which can lead to cavities and other serious problems. When food and plaque buildup isn’t removed in a timely manner, it can lead to gum disease and the decaying of teeth. Tooth decay and gum disease can lead to dental procedures, like root canals, crowns, dental implants, and other expensive oral surgeries.

Self-Confidence - You understand the importance of confidence. If you are confident, then you are more apt to try new things and take on challenges, like leadership roles. Kids and teenagers are no different and should always feel confident as they grow up. Crooked teeth shouldn’t be what holds them back or creates a lack of self-esteem. Ensure your child is able to smile freely by giving them a beautiful smile with braces.

Great Price - At Centra Dental in South Houston, we offer all of our dental clients a great price on braces. Starting at only $1995, our braces are very affordable. We work with all of our patients on payment plans and we also take most PDP, DPPO, and PPO dental insurance plans.

Whatever your reason for needing braces, our dental office in South Houston can ensure you receive the best dental treatment. Most braces are worn anywhere between 12 to 24 months. No matter how long you have to wear braces, we will be there for you every step of the way to make sure your teeth come out looking amazing. At Centra Dental, we want you to always have a beautiful and healthy smile.

Wisdom teeth. It’s strange that we call them this since more often than not, we recommend having them removed. Although we are figuratively removing wisdom, at Centra Dental, we think it’s a really smart move.

Wisdom teeth are molars at the end of the line on all four corners of the jawline. There are various reasons why our dentists at Centra Dental recommend these teeth being removed.

Reasons to remove wisdom teeth:

Out of Line - Wisdom teeth often become problematic for our dental patients because they can grow too high compared to the other molars. When this happens, it creates trauma to the teeth and gums. Patients often complain of pain from the wisdom teeth.

Crowding - Sometimes the wisdom teeth can cause crowding of the molars, which can lead to discomfort, pain, and swelling of the gums. The problem could worsen by causing a shift in the teeth. If your wisdom teeth are creating havoc on your other molars, then we recommend you coming in soon to have them removed.

Hard to Maintain - Wisdom teeth, since they are so far in the back of your mouth, can be difficult to reach and properly clean. When teeth aren’t properly cleaned consistently, plaque begins to build up, food particles are missed, and cavities begin to take root. Cavities that go untreated can lead to much bigger problems and can become very painful. If your wisdom teeth aren’t receiving the proper care because they are difficult to reach and maintain, then you may want to consider having them removed.

Post-Orthodontic - There have been times that wisdom teeth come in late, after someone has received braces. Because of the force of these teeth, they can negate the positive results of having had braces. They can actually move your teeth back to being misaligned or crooked, requiring dental patients to receive further orthodontic work.

Your wisdom teeth may be a problem and you don’t even know it. Some patients don’t even notice their wisdom teeth until it they become a problem. Having our dentist at Centra Dental examine your oral condition and conduct an X-ray to see the status of your wisdom teeth can ensure your teeth and gums remain healthy.

If your wisdom teeth are hurting you, then contact us today and schedule your dental appointment to have them removed.
